HALLOWEEN DRESS-UP DAY GUIDELINES
This year Rancho San Joaquin Middle School will recognize Halloween by allowing students to wear appropriate costumes to school. Rancho’s staff does not encourage or discourage school wide participation in a Halloween Dress-Up Day.

It is important to remember that appropriate school behavior is expected on Halloween Day and that inappropriate behavior will result in a loss of privilege to participate and possible disciplinary consequences.

The following guidelines will be in effect:

  • 1. Dress-up for students and teachers will take place on Thursday, October 31. Dressing-up for Halloween is optional for both students and teachers.
  • 2. Costumes must be:
    • a. Practical and Safe - Students must be able to work at their desks and move throughout the campus without being physically inhibited or a hazard to anyone. No weapons or look-alikes of any kind.
    • b. Respectful/Not Controversial- They should not be offensive to a gender, nationality, race, or religious group.
    • c. Costumes should be tasteful— No costume should display or use props that make reference to alcohol, drugs, or tobacco. No costumes with reference to material that is obscene, suggestive, revealing, offensive, sexual innuendo, etc. will be tolerated.
    • d. Modest - Students must wear costumes that cover themselves as described in the school dress code standards (i.e. – no spaghetti straps/strapless tops, no undergarments may be showing, etc).
  • 3. Masks are not allowed to be worn at school at any time.
  • 4. Hats may be worn if they are part of the costume, but should be removed during class time.
  • 5. Teachers and/or administrators may deny use of props that are inappropriate or disruptive for school.
  • 6. All make-up should be applied at home. No make-up or hair spray should be brought to school.

Rancho teachers and/or administrators will have final discretion and decision-making authority as to the appropriateness of any costume if it impacts the learning environment in a negative manner.

NOTE: Rancho will not tolerate students behaving in a way that is intended to shock/scare/intimidate others.
